National Walking Day

Wednesday, April 6 is National Walking Day. To celebrate, local men's salon Keep It Cut is offering anyone who walks 5,000 steps on April 5 - 6 a FREE haircut.  Here's how it works: track your steps on a fitness tracking app. If you walk 5,000 steps or more on April 5 or 6, come into one of Keep It Cut's salons, show them proof of your step count, and get a free haircut!

National Walking Day is sponsored by the American Heart Association to encourage people to get up and move, then turn that into a part of a healthy lifestyle. Studies show walking even 30 minutes a day can reduce chronic disease. So just how far is 5,000 steps? For an average person, it will be 2.5 miles.

Keep It Cut salons offers unlimited professional cuts, styles and grooming for one monthly membership fee. Packages range from $26 a month for unlimited cuts to $46 a month for cuts, washes and grooming.  Individual cuts are $17. There are three Keep It Cuts in Phoenix, Tempe, and Ahwatukee. Find details on locations and hours online at www.KeepItCut.com.

Mobile Minis/ Barton House

Mobile Minis is a local 501c3 non-profit that visits charities and organizations in need of healing time with horses. Since these horses are minis, it is less intimidating for folks. Next week (Monday) they are headed to the Barton House, an alzeiheimer's assisted living facility in Scottsdale. The patients really open up and get excited when the mini-horses come. There are volunteer opportunities and ways for people to get involved.

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, it's difficult to know what to do. Home care is simply not feasible for most families today. The alternative, institutionalization in the locked wing of a nursing home, is far from ideal.

In fact, most cognitively impaired people don't need the regimented care provided in a nursing home. What they need is a place designed specifically for them with an environment that feels like a home, not a hospital. We strive for a program of care that stresses individuality and interpersonal contact.
