National Poison Prevention Week

Dangers are lurking in bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and garages where 90-percent of poisonings occur in the home.  This third week in March marks National Poison Prevention Week.  More than 2 million poisonings are reported each year to the 57 poison control centers across the country.   Poisonings are the number one cause of injury related deaths. The majority of non-fatal poisonings occur in children younger than six years old. Pediatrician, Dr. Sheena Banerjee of AllKids Urgent Care is here with advice.

Medications: The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) reports that 57 percent of human exposures reported to poison centers involved medications, or pharmaceuticals.  Parents should make sure medications are childproof and are not accessible to children.  Also be wary of containers such as supplements which may not be available in childproof containers.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) says 80 percent of exposures reported to poison centers involved people who swallowed a substance.  This can cause lung, skin and eye irritations.  Experts recommend keeping products in their original containers, some of which may already be child-resistant containers.  Obviously, you also want to store the product out of a child's reach by childproofing cabinets or keeping substances on a high shelf.

The AAPCC also says Never call medicine "candy." Poisons may look like food or drink. It is important to also keep medicines and household products away from food.  A good rule is to teach children to ask an adult before tasting anything. Don't overlook your laundry room, as many laundry products can be harmful if ingested or in the case of bleach also harmful to the skin.

Poisonous mushrooms and plants also contribute to poisonings each year.  So monitor your kids outside, especially the little ones who love to explore with their mouths.

In 2014, someone called the poison control center every 11 seconds!!!!  If you think someone has been poisoned, call 1-800-222-1222.  Put this number in your cellphone and near home phones.

5 Digital Apps to Help You Save

Saving money is tough, and it's tougher for some than others. While there are more opportunities to consumer today than ever before, there are also more ways to track and curb your spending. Here are a few digital apps that can help you save money and make smart financial decisions.

1.    Consumer Reports Mobile (iPhone and Android)
If shopping is an area where you need to rein in your spending, then this app is a must. Designed and operated by the highly regarded magazine and company of the same name, Consumer Reports Mobile gives you at-your-fingertip access to professional and consumer reviews, and the ability to check and compare prices in an instant. One popular feature enables you to use a barcode scanner to find the nearest deal on a product you're interested in purchasing.

2.    Level Money (iPhone and Android)
If drafting budgets doesn't come easy to you, Level can help. It automatically breaks down your spending into categories so that after just a month you'll have an idea of how much you're spending on areas as diverse as morning coffee, car maintenance, beauty products, and health care. Level also has a ticket showing you how much spendable cash you have left on a given day.

3.    Unsplurge (iPhone)
For many people, the big purchases and lifestyle changes they're able to make as a result of frugal living are what drive them to live frugally in the first place. If you're saving for the vacation of a lifetime, a big down payment, a wedding, or raising a child, this app can help you put your money where your head is.

4.    Digit (web and SMS)
Like several other apps, Digit links directly to your bank accounts. It monitors your daily spending, and promotes regular spending check-ins of the "where is my money going?" variety? Based on your spending habits, the app will recommend daily, monthly, and annual savings goals. Digit communicates via web and text messaging so it doesn't take up app space on your smartphone.

5.    Mint (iPhone and Android)
With a fairly comprehensive free version, Mint is one of the most widely used financial planning apps around. Link all of your accounts, and Mint will track your spending habits, notifying you when you're nearing your budget in a particular category or an unusually large transaction is made in your name. It's a great tool for helping you save and achieve your savings-related goals.
