Single by Choice: Heather Jones, Dating Expert, and Author

Why are more women choosing to be single?  It doesn't necessarily mean a woman doesn't want to get married or doesn't believe in marriage. More often it means women want to be in love and married but just haven't found the right guy.

Does this mean more women are too picky now?  It means we are waiting for the right man, because we can.  We have successful careers, we have things we want to accomplish on our own, and we own homes and have retirement plans.  Just a few short years ago this was not the case.  Women did not have the freedom and opportunity to choose a life for themselves, so they relied on having a husband to provide stability. We are extremely fortunate to live in the Unites States.

Are we in the midst of a feminist movement?  Absolutely, we've been in the midst of one for well over a hundred years, the landscape is ever evolving.  Today it looks like women waiting until much later to get married, if at all, having children out of wedlock because they are ready and financially stable, and not settling for anything less than they feel they deserve.

What will this do to the future of marriage and family?  I believe it will strengthen it.  Waiting until later in life to get married and start a family is a smart decision.  You've both lived independently, made mistakes, hopefully had a lot of fun, and you see the value of coming together as two separate but whole individuals.  You don't need each other, you want each other.  You don't complete each other, you were complete before you found each other.
