60th Annual VNSA Used Book Sale at the State Fairgrounds.

"Generations of Readers" Book lovers of all descriptions will return once again this February to the Southwests largest used book sale.  The VNSA Used Book Sale will be held on February 13th and 14th at the Arizona State Fairgrounds.  More than a half million gently used books, DVDs, CDs, computer games and puzzles will be available at greatly reduced prices. Books on many topics, spanning a total of 27 categories, are available.

Teri Harnisch, VNSA President, says: “Our theme: 'Generations of Readers' has a special meaning to us. Many of our members have generations of family and friends that volunteer with them. Together, VNSA and its generations of volunteers, donors, and shoppers have worked to truly make a difference in our community, and we are thankful for all those efforts."

Throughout the year VNSA members spend thousands of hours collecting, sorting, and cataloging donated books for the sale.  "Our volunteers take pride in organizing this once a year event and we are honored to help support our charities." Harnisch adds.  The VNSA is staffed entirely by volunteers.

Proceeds from the sale stay local, benefiting the Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County, a non-profit dedicated to teaching adults how to read, write, and speak English and prepare for the GED.The book sale also benefits the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation.  The AFFCF promotes the self-esteem and enriches the lives of children in foster care by funding activities, education and other needs.

The VNSA has donated more than $8 million to Valley non-profits by through the years. Books start at only $1 with everything half-price on Sunday except items in the rare and unusual category.  Sale hours on Saturday are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Sunday hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale is located in the Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall at 17th Avenue and West McDowell Road in Phoenix.

Galentines Day

Of course you've heard of Valentine's Day, but have you heard of "Galentine's" Day? Made popular by television show, "Parks & Rec.," the concept is to focus not on the love between partners, but the love between friends. On Saturday, Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Historic Downtown Glendale will be the place to bring your gals for a fun day of activities to celebrate friendship.

Participating merchants wanted to create an event to celebrate this strong love between women, and in partnership with the Glendale Convention & Visitors Bureau, they are planning a perfect day for you and your best friends to celebrate Valentine's Day.  This party is all about celebrating love, your love for your friends, and your love for yourself with a little splurging.

"The connections that women make with each other, the support they give and take, and the loyalty through thick and thin, all those deserve to be celebrated," stated Valerie Burner, owner of Bears & More and event chair. "There is no better day to host this party than the day that is about celebrating love."

As you travel around from shop to shop, you and your "galentines" will enjoy collecting Valentines that you can add to a garland which you can hang at home.  This special day is different from many of the other events in the Historic Downtown area, as it has been planned with an adult audience in mind.  There will be fun things to do along the way too, including these activities (some including additional charge):

Delfina's Salon & Day Spa is offering specials all month long for Chocolate mani/pedis and chocolate body scrub (both regularly priced at $70, now $50 each); Appointments necessary.

At Blue House Boutique, demonstrations on how to transform a lamp with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint offered throughout the afternoon.

The Open Door will have a visit from The Mud Dabber, offering guests a hands on craft: visitors can make a heart or a star (hearts for Valentine's Day and stars for Arizona's birthday); also enjoy cake to celebrate Arizona's birthday

  • Bears & More will offer a special surprise activity
  • Papa Ed's Ice Cream will be offering a special: three scoops of their popular chocolate flavors for the price of two!
  • Create your Galentine's garland, which is 20+ pieces long and features vintage pinup girl art
  • Dress as Rosie the Riveter or a 1940's pinup girl for fun some of the merchants will be dressed up, too

Make your plans now to attend the Oh So Lovely "Galentine's" Day party in Catlin Court and Historic Downtown Glendale on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 10 am until 3:30 pm.  Start your day at the Glendale Visitor Center to pick up an activity list and the beginning pieces to your Vintage Valentine garland (for the 1st 100 visitors).

Libido Help: Women Through the Ages:  Life, Love & Libido in Our 40's

Our 40s rock! What doesn't rock is what's happening to our bodies. Even though the average age of menopause is 52, the early forties is when ovaries begin their final preparation for shutting up shop completely, and menopause. The ovaries actually start to slow down 10-15 years before menopause so our early 40's is when most of us officially start what is called perimenopause.

The bad news is that this decline can not only lead to testosterone deficiency symptoms like low libido, weight gain, mental instability and mood swings, but also symptoms of estrogen deficiency, including hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, heart palpitations, and skin changes. Ouch!

Don't despair, and don't wait any longer. All of these changes are hormone-related and can be alleviated with proper hormone therapy. Don't stand by idly when your body is screaming for some expert attention. The 40s can and should be an impressive sexual peak for us. We just have to get these hormones in check.
