Healthy Gut

Boosting got health is a hot topic these days! Everyone wants a way to boost their immune system naturally or lose a few pounds or just deal with those allergies or autoimmune issues with drugs!! Dr. Amy Shah gives us tips on which foods are bad and good for your gut.

Fixing your gut health can do all of those plus more. It's the area that is growing the most in the medical and health world currently.

We know it can influence weight, autoimmune disease/allergies, your immune system and just your overall sense of well-being.

Here are some of the worst foods for building up that gut.

The point being here that your intestines are made up of trillions of bacteria. When you feed these bacteria healthy food that I will mention they thrive- and help your immune system and your hunger signals but if you feed it the wrong stuff you will get all kinds of symptoms like headaches and weight gain.

Gut killer number one: artificial sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners have been shown to be toxic to gut bacteria. There are studies on the different ones but it seems like most of them kill off good bacteria.

Gut killer number 2: antibiotics in processed meat

In recent years there has been more oversight on antibiotic use in animals but still the American Academy of pediatrics has given a very strong stance on stopping antibiotics in meat because of resistance but more important in my eyes is that it is killing off good bacteria. Not only do antibiotics kill off good bacteria processed meat also produces a compound called LMAO which causes heart disease.

Gut killer Number 3: sugar in cookies cakes and candies

There are various mechanisms that sugar kills the good bacteria but one of the strongest is that bad bacteria actually feed on sugar and then the good bacteria that later on in the colon-- gets starved.

Now onto the things that boost the gut!

Gut boosting food number one: Fiber!

Fiber has been proven over and over again to be the one food that feeds the good gut bacteria. Most other food is digested and broken down prior to the large intestine where most of our bacteria live. Fiber is the only one that makes it there and feeds that good bacteria.

Gut boosting food number two: Fermented foods like pickles

As you may have heard fermented foods are all the rage. When you buy a fermented food like a pickle just make sure that it does not have preservatives and additives. Take something like natural organic pickles. Fermented me they actually contain live bacteria. In fact this is more likely to get to the gut then probiotics.

Gut boosting food  number 3:  Probiotics

Now you have to be really careful with probiotics it’s extremely on regulated industry and people just put things out there that don't even contain half of the live bacteria that is promised. There are a few brands that consistently do well in studies and those are the two that I will mention to you.
