ACU Firestorm Eyeing a Playoff Push

Posted: Updated:

Arizona Christian has been playing football for 2 seasons.  The Firestorm are right on schedule for Head Coach Donnie Yantis.

"To win the conference championship is nothing short of a blessing," says Yantis.  "Very pleased with where we're at and where we're going.  Our goal is to build a national champion."

There's nothing easy about the building process at ACU.

"Bus rides and buffets, that's how we roll," joked Yantis as his team prepared for a 15 hour ride to take on Baccone College this weekend in Oklahoma.

16 of the Firestorm's 22 starters are from Arizona.  Running back P.J Sparks leads the team in rushing.  Sparks transferred in from North Dakota after thinking he was finished with football.

"I was completely done playing, hung up the cleats," says Sparks.  "I've always said this is a program of 2nd chances."

The Firestorm are at Baccone this Saturday at noon.  Right now ACU is the first school outside the Top 25 in NAIA.  An impressive win this weekend and they could be awarded a playoff berth.
