MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Phoenix police are investigating a deadly shooting on Monday afternoon that may have been the result of an attempted robbery.

The shooting occurred about 3 p.m. outside Penny Pincher Auto Parts, located at 2401 W. Van Buren Street, just west of Interstate 17.

According to witnesses at the scene, a man entered the store, waved a gun around and announced a robbery was to take place. They said a security guard then emerged from the back of the store and a struggle ensued.

Witnesses said the struggle spilled to outside of the store and that when the would-be robber pulled a gun on the security guard, the guard shot and killed the man.
