Valley mom has big medical billing blunder

A Valley mom thought she had done everything right, but in the end she still got stuck with a $5,100 medical bill.

“Harper will be 3 in December, and Hendricks just turned 1, so we have our hands full," said the mom, who wished to be identified as Marcia.  

After her second child arrived, she had some complications and needed to be seen by a specialist. Before she did, Marcia contacted her insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield, to make sure the specialist was in-network. Marcia said she was told yes and that all she would have to pay was a $60 co-pay.   
   
She saw the specialist, had some tests done and was then told they would have to perform a minor procedure.
   
Marcia said she agreed, but only after having the doctor's office call and check with the insurance company.

“They said, 'Well, as long as it is in-office, it's just the $60 co-pay,'" she said. 
 
However, after the office procedure was done, Marcia received a notice from her insurance company saying she would have to pay up.  

“The actual bill for that procedure came to, I think, $5,150 - something like that," Marcia said. 

Marcia couldn't understand why she owed so much money, so she contacted Blue Cross Blue Shield again.

“They said check with the doctor [and] make sure they billed it right. [I] checked with the doctor. They said, 'Oh yeah, we billed it right.' Well then it became this. No one knew what happened," Marcia said. 

Marcia said she was beyond frustrated and stressed out.

“It's like you're buying a car and you go and they say the car is $10,000, and then you drive it home and they say, just kidding, it's really $100,000. At least you can return the car. I can't return this procedure. There's nothing I can give back," she said. 

3 On Your Side contacted Blue Cross Blue Shield, which looked into the matter. 

“3 On Your Side called yesterday, and already today I had a response from Blue Cross, and they apologized for all my hassles, said it was a misquote and they were going to adjust all my claims back down to the $60 co-pay and it would all be taken care of," Marcia said. 

Marcia won’t owe that $5,100 and she said it took 3 On Your Side's involvement to make things right.

“It took forever for me to get anything done. Well, I didn't get anything done, and then 3 On Your Side got involved, and what do you know, everything's taken care of, so I really appreciate what you have done," Marcia said. 

A big thank you to Blue Cross Blue Shield for getting involved so quickly and resolving the matter.
