The District PHX - Giving Back
Eighteen year-old Bella Weems is changing the face of entrepreneurship with Origami Owl, a customizable jewelry company she started at the age of 14 with a capital investment of $350 earned from babysitting.
The high school graduate heads daily to the corporate headquarters where a team that numbers in the hundreds has taken over most of the day-to-day operations that are required to keep producing a line of jewelry that has realized unprecedented demand and empowered scores of women to start their own Origami Owl businesses.
The oldest of five children, Bella enjoys close relationships with her siblings despite a schedule that involves attending college in the fall and a current internal internship at Origami Owl which consists of spending a few weeks in each department to learn as much as possible about day-to-day operations. In addition Bella is passionate about leading the Origami Owl Hoot Academy, a youth program for 12 to 17 year olds who can work alongside their Origami Owl Designer parent or guardian. This program assists with providing leadership and business skills that are invaluable for these kids as they think about their future aspirations.
Financial success and the purchase of a white Jeep far behind her, Bella's focus has always been about more than jewelry sales. Origami Owl's core values include, #5: Love What You Do and #1: Operate by the Golden Rule, and they are most often written on pink paper or handwritten on the walls in bright paint.
This maverick spirit and perhaps lack of business background worked in her favor, because Bella and her family took a wholly unique approach to structuring the company's business and have never looked back.
When Bella says, "be the change you want to see," she can actually back it up. The hybrid social selling model employed by Origami Owl has birthed legions of entrepreneurs in return, some of whom who have lifted themselves out of poverty in the process and have already begun using their own success to Pay It Forward, Core Value #4.

Lucky Paws is a non-profit animal shelter that provides a cage-free living environment to dogs, cats, and bunnies that have been rescued from high-kill shelters. The animals share comfortable rooms where they lounge on couches, socialize together and get plenty of exercise outside. Lucky Paws is a magical place for animals where they are calm knowing they are in a safe place and loved. All Lucky Paws animals are vetted, socialized with many volunteers, and eventually adopted after a screening process.

As the evolving diplomatic dialogue between the Republic of Cuba and the United States continues to make headlines after 54 years of embargo, more than one million Americans are predicted to legally visit Cuba in 2016 through People to People educational exchanges between the two countries. More than 350 flights a month from Miami transport curious Americans across the Florida Straits to Cuban cities on a discovery of life in a mysterious and romantic island so near, yet so far.
For two American music producers, Woody Wilson and Neil Birnbaum, the allure and popularity of Cuban jazz in the United States was enough for them to create a specialized People to People program with a distinct focus on Cuban art, music and dance. Through successful cultural exchanges and numerous trips to Cuba in recent years, Wilson and Birnbaum have launched Cuba Rhythm & Views, a unique exploration of creative life and performance in a nation ostensibly off-limits to Americans for more than a half-century
Featuring a mix of jazz and classical programs, Wilson and Birnbaum are appealing to arts aficionados who are more interested in cultural exploration than a tour of a cigar or rum factory. In December of this year, they will take up to 30 travelers to Cuba for an insight into the creative lives of the island's artists and musicians. In January, they will take an another group to accompany eminent Chilean conductor, Maximiano Valdés, who will conduct the Orquesta Nacional de Cuba in works by Rachmaninoff, Ginastera and Brahms.
Lakeshore Music's Cuba Rhythm & Views tours are scheduled for Dec. 9-17, 2015 and Jan. 26-Feb. 3, 2016. Travel is direct from Miami, returning from Havana. For more information, visit www.cubarhythmandviews.com, or write to email@example.com.
