PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

One man is dead and two more are on the run from police after an altercation in a West Phoenix alley ending in a stabbing Thursday morning.

It happened about 9 a.m. in an alley behind homes in the area of 65th Avenue and Cheery Lynn Road.

"We know that a man has been stabbed. We know that for a fact," Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes said. "This young man lost his life this morning."

An eyewitness told me late this afternoon that the man who was stabbed appeared to have been working with a partner, and that the pair attempted to steal the third man's backpack in the alley.

The witness said the man with the backpack then pulled a knife and stabbed one of his alleged assailants.  The man with the backpack and the second alleged robber then fled the scene, according to the witness.

"We're going to have to try to locate two people now, and try to identify who this victim is," Holmes said. "Once we do that, we hope we can get some answers about what happened at about nine o’clock this morning."
