Get Ahead at Work

Getting ahead in the workforce can be tough- you know the saying it can be a dog eat dog world. However, it doesn't have to be when it comes to taking your career to the next level.

Ben Howard, managing partner of VincentBenjamin gives 5 tips on you can use to climb the career ladder or get ahead in your career.

1.         Update your resume. One of the biggest mistakes professionals make is to not keep their resume up to date even while they are working. The issue is that you may forget about some key accomplishments by the time you need to edit your resume to find your next opportunity. Review and update regularly. Do this with your LinkedIn page as well.

2.         Read all the time. We all learned as kids that reading is fundamental but it will also help you boost your career. It actually doesn't matter what you read as long as you are reading. Reading help the brain stay active and healthy. Add another level to your reading by choosing books that related to your chosen industry.

3.         Own your mistakes. When the most successful people are asked about their accomplishments hey all have one very important trait in common. They are all willing to make mistakes and learn from them. Focusing too much on perfection can actual stall your career. Instead, be willing to take chances as long as you're open to learning from your mistakes.

4.         Be a connector. Networking is considered one of the keys for unlocking career and job search success but it is only part of the puzzle. The people who are best at networking are because they make connections. Don't only look at what a new contact can do for you but who else you might know who can benefit from connecting with this new person and vice versa.

5.         Don't follow the crowd. Finally, a way to stand out from the pack in a good way is to always be authentically you. Don't be afraid to rock the boat sometimes. Don't avoid injecting your personality into the things you do. Sometimes it feels safer to blend in to the background but you won't get noticed that way.
