The father of the alleged freeway shootings suspect is speaking out about his son's arrest.
"I know my son," says Leslie Merritt, Sr. "My entire family knows my son. There's no way he could have done it."
Leslie Merritt, Jr. was arrested Friday night in connection with the recent string of shootings on Valley freeways. He is being held on a $1 million cash bond.
Saturday night, we sat down with his father, Leslie Merritt, Sr., to talk about the arrest.
He said he has not yet spoke directly to his son since the arrest.
He said he doesn't want the public to make assumptions, and that just because his son was arrested, the public should remember that people are innocent until proven guilty.
Merritt, Sr. said that he knows his son, and what he knows makes him believe he is innocent.
And he says that Merritt's past should not take people jump to conclude that he has done this. "Anytime we've done something wrong, we man up to it," he says. "We accept our punishment. If we did this crime, do the time. Admit to what you've done and take your punishment. My son's told me via his fiance via the news, via TV, that he's innocent."
Merritt, Sr. also said that he hopes whoever is responsible for the freeway shootings will be brought to justice.
