MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Aaron Nottingham, 18, spoke to the media Monday afternoon to explain that he and his friends aren't copycats, and they just wanted to have fun but made a very dumb decision.

"I didn't want anybody's vehicle to be damaged," Nottingham said.

Nottingham, along with his friends, Albert German and Christian Cook, allegedly drove around Mesa firing off rocks from a slingshot.

Investigators point out two incidents for which the trio might be responsible.  The first incident is near State Route 24 and Ellsworth Road; the second is near Queen Creek and Ellsworth roads.  A victim who had a window knocked out managed to get a picture of Nottingham’s car as it fled.  Nottingham claims he didn’t know his buddies were targeting cars.

"I didn't notice that they shattered a window 'til they caught me," Nottingham said.

Police nabbed Nottingham the following day in Chandler.  He claims he learned about being called a copycat while being booked.

"We didn’t try to hit or target anything; it was just random shots outside of the car," he said.

He echoed what German's mother, Michele German, said Sunday.

"Yes, the kids are stupid," she said. "There was no intent to hurt anyone. My son has never hurt anyone; he's not that kind of person."
