(3 ON YOUR SIDE) -

Microsoft is about to unleash a brand new operating system.

"On July 29, they're going to release Windows 10," Internet and technology expert Ken Colburn said.

It's an upgrade that's generating some buzz, partly because it's free.

"If you have Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, which are the last three operating systems, you're eligible for a free upgrade," Colburn explained.

Previous operating system upgrades cost consumers $100 or more.

Colburn was allowed a sneak peek of the new system and told 3 On Your Side he likes what he sees. He also said the upgrade is overdue.

"You'll notice they skipped over Windows 9," Colburn said. "They went from Windows 8 to Windows 10. That's a clear signal that they realized they kind of dropped the ball with Windows 8. A lot of people weren't happy with their Windows 8 experience."

Microsoft hopes consumers will be much happier with the Windows 10 experience, which is designed to allow you to use your computer much like a smartphone. It includes universal apps along with something new to Windows, but familiar to Apple users.

"[It's] something called Cortana, which is their version of Siri or Google Now basically, where you can speak to the computer and have it go and do searches and what have you," Colburn explained.

As always, there could be some unforeseen technical glitches that could arise with the roll out.

Colburn reminds consumers that you won't need a brand new computer. Just make sure your machine is running smoothly before doing the upgrade. Microsoft is hoping consumers will like the new experience of being able to unify all of their Windows devices.

"So if you have a Windows laptop and a Windows computer, they're hoping you get a Windows phone, and they're hoping you get a Windows tablet," Colburn said. "And if you do, then basically everything runs on all your equipment seamlessly. "
