Move Live Tour
Derek and Julianne Hough
This month is Men's Health Awareness Month and there are some "Manly Meals" that can help you combat certain diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol and depression, just to name a few. For more information go to www.transformyouaz.com.
Diabetes - For the meat and potatoes lover who is also diabetic, try a shepherd's pie with sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes. White potatoes are constituted of simple carbohydrates and therefore raise your blood sugars quicker, while sweet potatoes metabolize slower and create a gradual change in blood sugar, keeping your insulin levels more stable.
Prostate Cancer - Go for a Three Bean Chili, which is high in fiber. Studies have shown a diet high in fiber may help control the progression of prostate cancer in early stages of the disease. Mix in tomatoes which contain lycopene, which studies have found to help prevent prostate cancer.
Heart Disease - For men with heart disease or at risk for heart disease, try these Salmon Sliders - The American Heart Association has recommended that people eat fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids at least twice a week. These unsaturated fats have proven in studies to be the nutrients that reduce the risk of dying of heart disease.
High Cholesterol/Stroke - for the burger lover who needs to watch his saturated fat go for a bison burger. Ground beef is high in fat with just a 3 ounce serving of 80 percent lean ground beef after cooked, contains a whopping 15 grams of total fat. Of this fat, about 6 grams comes from saturated fat, and 1 gram comes from trans- fat. Ground bison contains much less fat than ground beef, with just 7 grams of total fat in a 3 ounce serving. Of this fat, only 3 grams comes from saturated fat and none comes from trans-fat. It is only 150 calories and 22 grams of protein as compared to the beef which is 216 calories and 15 grams of protein.
To Gain Weight - Chicken Cheese Avocado Jalapeno Hoagie or Hero. That is literally a mouthful, but by adding in extra protein from the chicken, dairy from the cheese, fat from the avocado and hero sized roll you are adding healthy calories, extra carbs and a spicy kick!
