Viewers for month of May happy to see money refunded

(3 ON YOUR SIDE) -

Consumers had problems in all kinds of different areas like contracting companies, websites and even hospitals. But in the end, it took 3 On Your Side to help get their money back.

We helped people like Billie Betzina during the month of May. Her problem started when she wanted to replace her baseboards and patio door, and hired a company called CCS K Lee Enterprises. But after giving the company $750 up front, which was half of the total cost, the company never showed back up again.

So, did the Betzinas get anything at all for their money? "Nothing. Absolutely nothing but heartache," Betzina told 3 On Your Side. "You know, we don't have that kind of money. I can't throw $750 away."

3 On Your Side found out a guy named Phil Jenkins runs CCS K Lee Enterprises, so 3 On Your Side's Gary Harper went to the address he lists on his invoice to find out why he took the Betzinas $750 and disappeared.

At the address, we came across a guy who said he was related to Jenkins and agreed to tell Jenkins we were looking for him regarding some missing money.

Our visit paid off, because after leaving, Jenkins called 3 On Your Side and explained how he got involved in a business venture that had gone sour and acknowledged he owes numerous people money.

Regardless, after 3 On Your Side got involved, Jenkins returned the $750 that he took from the Betzinas. Billie Betzina says she couldn't have done it without 3 On Your Side's help. "Anybody that's got a problem, call Gary," she said.

3 On Your Side also helped out Erika Reyes.

She was recently sent to collections by Banner Estrella Medical Center all because of a $1,500 emergency room visit back from two years ago.

However, it was a clerical error because a hospital employee typed in Reyes' insurance information incorrectly.

Still, being in collections caused her credit score to drop 60 points.

After 3 On Your Side got involved, Banner realized it goofed up, removed the bill from collections, and informed all three credit bureaus to restore Reyes' credit.

Reyes says she couldn't have done it without 3 On Your Side's help. "Overall, it's been about two or three years, and Gary Harper came in and just resolved it in a week," she told 3 On Your Side.

And remember Phyllis King? She tried to order ink cartridges from an online website and wound up accidentally getting charged double.

King says she tried getting the company to return $100, which is half of what she paid, but couldn't get any kind of refund.

However, after 3 On Your Side contacted the Florida-based company, they sent King a check, a check she says she only received after 3 On Your Side's involvement. "I think it's phenomenal. I think they should have given me interest, though," she jokingly said.

And when you add up all the money 3 On Your Side helped get back to viewers, the month of May was pretty rewarding because a total $4,869 was returned, recouped or saved.

And when you add up all the money 3 On Your Side helped recoup, the grand total for this year so far is $36,128.

    Consumer trend: The gender gap

The fashion industry purposely has an identity crisis lately with men's inspired clothing for women and women's silhouettes hitting the runways and racks for men. But now clothing lines are going even further by taking gender out of the equation completely. Is this trend simply a fashion fad? Or is it something more? 3 On Your Side's Gary Harper has the lowdown on 'gender neutral' clothing. (Friday, Jan. 27, 2017)
