Unique summer camp teaches kids aerial arts

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - They're skills used by performers in Cirque du Soleil shows. This summer, your kids and teens can also be swept off their feet during an aerial arts camp.

Scorpius Dance Theatre is offering two camps this summer: an aerial camp for kids ages 8-12 and an aerial camp for teens ages 13-17.

Both camps go will go Mondays through Fridays from June 8 to June 19. The kids' camp will be from 10 a.m. to noon; the teen camp will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.The summer camp final performance will be held June 19 at 7 p.m. The cost is $350 per student. This includes 2 comp tickets to the June 19 performance.

Students will learn basic aerial fabric and aerial hoop skills. Throughout the classes, students will work together to create a themed performance to present at the culmination of the camp.

"We are going to be teaching beginning and intermediate silks and lyra hoop," says director Lisa Starry. Using aerial silks, ropes, hoops, and trapezes as the tools, students will be guided through exercises and work on shapes, wraps, transitions, and “tricks."

The Summer Aerial Camps will be held at Scorpius Dance Theatre's aerial studios, located in the Metropolitan Arts Institute building at 1700 N 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85007.
