KEARNY, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

A man was fatally shot after charging at Kearny police officers with a samurai sword, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's officials said Shaun Johnson, 35, had been asked to leave a local bar Friday night because he was causing a disturbance. Johnson's wife later called 911 and the dispatcher could hear yelling and screaming in the background.

Kearny police officers arrived in the neighborhood and saw Johnson's wife walking down the street with her children.

As two officers approached the home, Johnson came charging out at them and was swinging a samurai sword, Sheriff Paul Babeu said.

The officers told him to drop the sword, but he refused and ran behind the home.

Babeu said the officers chased after Johnson and as they rounded a corner, he was waiting for them with the sword above his head in a striking stance.

Babeu said one of the officers who was about 6 feet away from Johnson feared for his safety and fired four rounds, striking Johnson in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three officers have been placed on leave as PCSO detectives continue to investigate the shooting.

It was the 26th officer-involved shooting in Arizona in 2015, including 17 in the Phoenix metro area.
