PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - This weekend, a little boy drowned in a Valley pool. This was the first water-related child fatality of the year.

Now, the Valley's drowning prevention community education outreach program is working to raise awareness about watching kids around water.

Tuesday morning, a so-called WAVE walk took place to remind people the importance of water safety. WAVE stands for Water Awareness Vigilance and Education.

Volunteers gathered at 35th Avenue and Dunlap to help with the event to promote water safety.

The WAVE group is made up of members from:

Phoenix Fire Department
Paradise Valley/Phoenix College Fire Academy
SRP
Phoenix Police Department
City of Phoenix Aquatics
Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona
Maricopa County Safe Kids

During Tuesday's campaign, officials and volunteers canvassed the neighborhoods, handing out flyers and distributing information about emergency plans, pool fences and life-saving measures.
