Cool down, stay healthy with refreshing prickly pear drinks

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Prickly pears are a desert health food staple. It can lower cholesterol and blood sugar, help fight diabetes and obesity, and even cure a nasty hangover.

Doctor of acupuncture and medicine Dr. Ed Lamadrid shared some tips and recipes to incorporate this super food into your diet with refreshing drinks, just in time to cool off in warm weather.


Prickly Pear Tea:

Fill 8 oz. glass or one cup with tea (hot or cold)

Add 1 Teaspoon of prickly pear cactus juice or nectar and stir well

Prickly Pear Lemonade:

1 cup lemonade

2 cups of water

Add 1 tablespoon of prickly pear cactus juice or nectar and stir well

Prickly Pear Breakfast Shake (serves 2):

2 tablespoons of prickly pear cactus juice or nectar

1 large banana, peeled and sliced

4 ice cubes

1 1/2 tablespoons of honey

1 cup coconut or almond milk

Diabetic Friendly Prickly Pear Smoothie:

2 tablespoons of prickly pear cactus juice or nectar

1/2 whole cucumber, peeled and chopped

2 cups pineapple juice or chopped pineapple cubes

1 cup of orange juice

1 cup filtered water
