PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

Five students from The Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona received $13,000 worth of scholarships this morning at a surprise assembly.

The girls are part of the first senior class to graduate from the nonprofit all-girls school. The senior class has 33 students, and every girl has been accepted to college. Most girls in the class are going to be the first in their family to go to college, and many of them have significant financial need. Many of the girls have overcome major obstacles to remain in high school and now attend college.

The five scholarship winners had to fill out applications and write an essay discussing their grades, future educational and professional goals, leadership at the school and financial need.

The winners are Bianca Garcia, who plans to study biomedical engineering at ASU's Barrett Honors College, Adrianna Galva, who plans to become a middle school teacher, Ginelly Powell, who will study to become a special education teacher at NAU, Cristy Sok, who will study marine biology in Calif., and Ana-Leeza Reyes who will study business management and economics at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Garcia and Galvan each received $5,000 scholarships. Powell, Sok and Reyes each earned $1,000 scholarships.
