Outdoor classroom unites learning and nature

Posted: Updated:
GILBERT, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

The Greenhouse Montessori School in Gilbert is helping its students connect with nature in their newly certified outdoor classroom.

The classroom incorporates both native and non-native plants into the learning experience of the students. The classroom has lemon, orange, pomegranate and pecan trees that provide both shade and observable learning tools. Children can learn about changes in seasons and even utilize the trees for cooking, baking, tasting collecting and more.

It's Earth day every day at Greenhouse Montessori, where students can take a rest from learning on hammocks, hunt for pinecones or get their hands dirty in the mud kitchen.

Children also have the opportunity to learn about the insect life on the plants in the classroom, from the importance of bees to the cycles of butterflies.
