MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

The City of Mesa is celebrating our home planet with their annual Earth Day Expo and Bike2Work event this morning at the Mesa City Plaza.

From 6 a.m. until 8 a.m., the City of Mesa set up various displays, games, exhibits and activities to educate residents about the environment and what they can do to keep the world beautiful.

The Mesa Transportation Department hosted the Bike2Work event. All City of Mesa employees were encouraged to ride their bikes to work to promote protecting the environment and to take advantage of Mesa's city bike trails.

The city offered free breakfast as well as activities like a Xeriscape game, where participants had the chance to win their own desert plant to take home for their yard. Planting just one desert plant can save up to 550 gallons per year.

Simple daily habits can make a big difference. Make your routine more Earth-friendly by ensuring all lights are turned off in unoccupied rooms, choosing energy efficient appliances, shopping with reusable bags and carpooling or biking. Also be sure to dispose of trash in a responsible way. Many items can be recycled, and waste like old electrical equipment is toxic if it ends up in landfills.
