Police Motorcycle Training and Competition rolls into Metro CenterPosted: Updated:
The Phoenix Police Department Traffic Bureau is hosting the 19th Annual "Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition" this weekend.
The event, presented by GO AZ Motorcycles, will be held April 17 and 18, 2015 in the parking lot of the Metro Center Mall in Phoenix. This dynamic training and friendly competition is open to all currently certified motorcycle officers.
The Southwest Police Motorcycle Training Competition is an annual event hosted by motorcycle officers from the Phoenix Police, Tucson Police and Las Vegas Police Departments. All proceeds from the event are donated to the local branch of the Special Olympics. This year Special Olympics Arizona will be the benefactor through the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Aside from supporting a deserving cause, this is a great opportunity for motorcycle officers to share training ideas to improve their skills and safety when riding motorcycles both on and off duty.
This two day competition and training, which is open to the public, will challenge the skills of more than 100 motor officers in a variety of events including two and four person team riding, and a slow ride competition.
The first SPMTC event was held in 1997 in Tucson, AZ. The founding officers attended a similar event and adopted the concept to sharpen their skills and raise awareness within their own communities. Every year hundreds of similar events take place across the country, sometimes being called a Police Motorcycle Rodeo. SPMTC has grown to become one of the largest events in the Southwest in anticipation, attendance, and support.
This is an excellent opportunity for officers to have fun and enjoy camaraderie while giving back to the community they serve. Without support from events like the Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition opportunities for Arizona Special Olympians to participate in organized sports would be limited.
