Valley bikers are kicking their day into gear this morning for the 23rd annual Bike to Work Day.
Hundreds of residents broke out their bicycles to get to work, and the first 350 riders received free breakfast at participating locations in Tempe.
The Bike to Work Day is part of a national Bike Month initiative. The movement aims to encourage people across the nation to ride bicycles as often as they can as an alternate mode of transportation.
The rest of the country celebrates National Bike Month during May, but here in the Valley we get the wheels turning a little sooner. Valley Bike Month kicks off in April to avoid the hot temperatures that begin to creep up in May.
There are various organized bike rides, safety expos and biking events planned for the entire month to celebrate life on two wheels.
Sponsors of Tempe Bike Month include Back East Bagels, Berning's Fine Jewelry, IKEA, REI, Ncounter, Whole Foods Market and Wildflower Bread Company, The Bicycle Cellar, Tempe Bicycle Action Group and Starbucks.
