Authorities say a 9-year-old student at a Rimrock elementary school has been arrested for having an unloaded handgun in his backpack.
Yavapai County Sheriff's officials say the .22-caliber gun was recovered and safely secured prior to the arrival of deputies at Beaver Creek Elementary School.
During the lunch period Wednesday afternoon, a teacher was informed by a student that a classmate brought a gun to school and showed it to at least four other students.
School administrators were notified, isolated the student and recovered the handgun.
Authorities say the gun is owned by the boy's grandmother and she told deputies it was kept in a cabinet drawer in her home.
The boy told deputies he brought the gun to school to show classmates who didn't believe he had one.
