Valley Top Docs: Doctors by day, hobbyists by nightPosted: Updated:
Phoenix Magazine is celebrating 20 years of its Top Doc issue this April. The magazine gathered all of its past issues and tallied up the nearly 2,700 physicians who made the cut for Top Doc.
The overall 20-year Top Doc champion is cardiologist Nathan Laufer with 27 honors. The only physician to make the issue every year is Robert Spetzler, a brain surgeon at Barrow Neurological Institute.
The anniversary edition of the magazine also features a section highlighting doctors with unique night jobs called "MD Moonlighters." One Valley doc spends his evenings cutting a pop music album, and another, Dr. Vincent Russo, is an orthopedic doctor by day and a sculptor by night.
Russo has been sculpting for about 20 years, and has studied under some world-renowned artists.
"I think the patients are comfortable with the idea that I actually know how to use my hands," Russo said.
Russo said that many sculptors are figurative, falling between the realms realism and idealism.
