Couple drowning in unfinished pool remodel

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Nola Yergen is a professional costume designer whose passion is transforming reality into fantasy.

"Oh, seeing the finished product (is my favorite part)," Yergen told 3 On Your Side. "Seeing it all on stage and when something comes together -- the lights and the sound and the actors and everybody doing their part -- it's just so beautiful."

However, instead of making costumes, Yergen has been trying to transform her backyard into an oasis by having her swimming pool remodeled.

"We especially want it because my boyfriend has three kids," Yergen said. "We want them to be able to swim in the summer, so they're not just sitting in front of the computer all day and all night."

But that backyard paradise has turned into a horrible eyesore, Yergen said. That's because late last year, the remodeling job that was started still isn't finished. She and her boyfriend said they wonder if the company will ever finish the job.

"Yeah, it's looked like this since November, since before Thanksgiving," Yergen said.

Yergen said the company she hired to remodel her pool was none other than Paddock Pools and Spa, a company that's been in the Valley for years.

"They promised that they could have this done by New Year's Eve," Yergen said. "I said, 'I have a New Year's Eve party, I'd really like to get this done.' All that they had done at that point was ... the demolition on the old pool, but nothing else."

The price tag for the remodeling job was over $17,000. Yergen said she's already paid more than $15,000, which is nearly the entire amount.

But for all that money, and all that time, the six-month-long project certainly isn't finished.

"I asked, 'What's going on?' And they wouldn't tell me anything until they would get someone out here, and then say, 'Someone's coming out' or 'Somebody's coming out next week,' and then no one would show up."

3 On Your Side got involved and after looking over Yergen's documents, much of her paperwork not only had Paddock listed on it, but also Paddock's sister company, Cameo Pools.

Cameo Pools never returned 3 On Your Side's inquiries, but Paddock Pools immediately responded to inquiries regarding Yergen and her unfinished remodeling job.

Paddock Pools blames a bustling recovering economy and a sudden splurge in business that has made it difficult to keep up with the demand. They claim they are working on hiring more people to help correct that.

After 3 On Your Side's involvement, Paddock says it will pick up the pace on Yergen's pool and have it completed by Friday. 3 On Your Side will air a follow-up news report on what happens.

But in the meantime, Yergen and her family are stuck waiting on results.

"I got a loan for this," Yergen explained. "And I've been sort of in limbo with that loan, because I can't really start paying it back until I get the project done and know how much it's going to be."
