Dragon Boat races glide across Tempe Town Lake

TEMPE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -  You can hear the beat of the drum as paddlers keep rhythm in the 12th Annual Arizona Dragon Boat Festival on Tempe Town Lake.

“It's free to the public. Come hang out, enjoy this weather,” said festival spokeswoman Raven Corcoran.

Eighty teams and thousands of paddlers and spectators from all over the United States have gotten together to help raise money for Arizona disabled sports.

“It's a huge sense of just community,” Corcoran said.

It takes 20 paddlers, a helmsman at the back, and a drummer perched high behind the colorful dragon head to run the 40-foot-long boat.

“With the heat this weekend, we have a lot of people coming from cold climates, so we've got to make sure everyone stays hydrated,” Corcoran said.

The Dragon Boat Festival picks back up Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
