Meet Me Downtown Phoenix
A weekly, casual 3.3-mile walk or run.
When: 5:15 p.m. on Mondays
Where: The Corner at CityScape, 50 W. Jefferson St., Phoenix.
Each Monday evening, people of all ages and abilities take part in a run or walk of about three miles through the city's core, starting and finishing at The Corner restaurant at CityScape, 50 W. Jefferson St.
It isn't timed. It isn't competitive. The goal is a relaxed, social atmosphere.
Oh, and it's free. Plus, participants can win stuff, like tickets to a Suns game and gift certificates from Sole Sports Running Zone and downtown restaurants.
In fact, the organizers would just assume that everyone take their time, stop a few minutes for a Zumba, yoga or other class in the park, talk to other runners and walkers, listen to live music along the way and simply sample downtown.
Afterward, participants gather at The Corner, where they get discounts and can win the goodies in a raffle.
The route takes participants through Heritage Park and past the Arizona Science Center, through the Arizona Center and Arizona State University campus, skirts Roosevelt Row and loops through Hance Park, then returns past Civic Space Park back to CityScape.
Participants simply have to sign up and check in before they start, which they can do online or at the beginning of the run. Each person wears a flashing red light for safety, and route maps are available.
That's about it. Participants get a T-shirt after 10 visits, a cap after 25, a pin after 50 and so on.
So far, 1,654 people have signed up and have accounted for 3,896 Meet Me Downtown visits.
Alternative events are in the works for summer, such as spin, swim or yoga classes.
