3OYS: Neighborhood eyesore finally cleaned up

Posted:
PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Jose Plasencia has enjoyed his Phoenix neighborhood for 30 years.

"I used to have my dog. I used to walk him around the neighborhood," he said.

But now, Plasencia says he and his wife, along with other people in the neighborhood, can't really enjoy their strolls like they used to.

"Well, it is a health hazard for everybody," he said. "Not just for us. For everybody."

He's talking about the house that is right across the street from him.

For years, it's been abandoned, and with no owner in sight, the property has basically turned into a dumping ground.

“They come and dump whatever they wanted over here. The back is even worse. There are mattresses, there are sofas, and all kinds of stuff," Plasencia said.

Not only is the property an eyesore, but it comes with all the things you'd find at a landfill.

"We have seen all kinds of bugs, like mice, cockroaches, bed bugs, all those things,” Plasencia said.

Plasencia's family and neighbors say they've done what they can to deal with the problem, but they can only do so much.

"The problem is that we're afraid that all of this is going to contaminate the neighborhood, with all the bugs that there are here," he said. "Pretty soon, we're all going to have it inside our houses."

Plasencia says he and his neighbors are at the end of their rope, and they turned to 3 On Your Side for help.

We got a hold of the City of Phoenix and told them about this mess, and soon as we did, they immediately got a crew out to the property and initiated a massive cleanup.

Everything was picked up and hauled away to where it should have been in the first place: a landfill.

Residents say they are relieved

“It looks different, way different,” Plasencia said.

“Yes, we woke up, and I heard the noise and I said, ‘Oh, my goodness. They're cleaning it up. I knew I should call Channel 3. I knew it.' So, I want to thank you very much because the whole neighborhood was very scared of all those bugs. So, thank you very much. We couldn't have done it without you," Plasencia's wife said.

A big thank you to our friends over at the City of Phoenix for acting so quickly on the situation.

Money is no game to Brandon and Amiyrah Martin. Two of their three children get allowance, but they’re not the only ones pocketing it. The couple also sets money aside for the adults in the house. They call it their ‘fun money.’
