PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Investigators say a fire at the Maryvale Golf course pro shop may have been intentionally set.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Aaron Ernsberger said firefighters responded to the historic shop near 59th Avenue and Indian School Road early Sunday morning and found it fully engulfed in flames.

Using three hose lines, fire crews were able to control and extinguish the blaze. Ernsberger said this kept the fire from consuming the structure, but it is considered a total loss.

The golf course has been under construction and closed to the public due to a $10 million redesign. The redesign is a joint venture between the City of Phoenix, which owns the property, and Grand Canyon University, which leases and manages it.

The pro shop was scheduled for demolition later this month.

"It's all fenced off and it's placard appropriately," Ernsberger said. "But, as you know, people try to gain access, and find an area that they can sneak through and do some activities out here at night, and it's been an issue."

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the arson hotline at 602-262-7766.

No injuries were reported.
