Suspects ID'd in Cottonwood Walmart brawl

COTTONWOOD, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

A suspect who shot and wounded a Cottonwood police officer was shot and killed in a gun battle in a Walmart parking lot late Saturday night that left seven other officers hurt and a second suspect wounded.

Several people in a van with Idaho license plates, including a girl and a woman, were trying to go into the men's bathroom at the store, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

A Walmart worker went to check on them and was shoved, so she called Cottonwood police for help, DPS said.

Nine suspects, all from the same family, then gathered in the parking lot and immediately began attacking the two arriving police officers, DPS said. More officers were called to help and the situation escalated.

Louie Solano witnessed the incident.

"I was here last night," he said. "It was a lot of noise. It looked like a riot in the middle of the parking lot. I mean it was unbelievable."

During the fight, one of the Cottonwood police officers, Sgt. Jeremy Daniels, 31, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. One of the suspects was shot and killed. He is identified as 21-year-old Enoch Gaver. A second suspect, David Gaver,  was shot in the abdomen, DPS said. That person's condition was not released.

"Lots of screams," Solano said. "Just screeching noise, like unreal, unreal. I heard about eight to 10 shots."

The other suspects who were eventually taken into custody were booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault, attempted homicide, obstruction and assault, DPS said. They included Jeremiah Gaver, Nathaniel Gaver, Peter Gaver and Ruth Gaver.

Seven other Cottonwood police officers suffered cuts and bruises, DPS said.

The wounded officer was airlifted to Flagstaff Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. The 31-year-old officer has been with the Cottonwood Police Department for 10 years. He is expected to make a full recovery.

A Walmart employee who attempted to help police ended up suffering a broken arm.

It's unclear what triggered the assault. DPS is the lead agency and were trying to determine whether the suspects were related. The investigation was continuing.

This marked the seventh officer-involved shooting outside the Valley so far this year.
