Man arrested for shoplifting, assaulting police officer

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Police have arrested a man who allegedly assaulted an officer when she tried to take him into custody for shoplifting.

Graham Patrick Fitzgerald, 23, has been booked on one count of aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of resisting arrest and one count of shoplifting. He also had an unrelated warrant.

Police contacted Fitzgerald outside of his mother's home after developing information Tuesday evening that led them to identify him as the suspect.

Police said Fitzgerald was seen shoplifting shoes from the Kohl's department store near 19th Avenue and Bell Road on Monday, March 9.

Security had already called police about an unrelated shoplifting.

When the officer arrived, security was attempting to stop Fitzgerald in the parking lot, according to police.

Fitzgerald reportedly got into a white Ford Mustang, ignoring the officer's commands to stop.

When the officer tried to remove Fitzgerald from the vehicle, he allegedly began driving away at a high rate of speed.

The officer was dragged about 10 feet and sustained minor injuries, police said.
