Two friends riding motorcycles on a major Valley street collided Sunday night, leaving one man fighting for his life.
The two motorcycles were riding side by side when they crashed into each other near Orangewood and both drivers, neither of whom was wearing a helmet, went down, Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said.
Crump said one of the riders had limited riding experience and had fallen behind the lead rider when witnesses said he accelerated to catch up.
The lead rider was slowing to turn right onto Orangewood and the trailing rider locked his brakes before colliding, Crump said.
A man in his 20s was thrown from his bike and it burst into flames.
He was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition and underwent surgery, Crump said.
The other driver was expected to be OK.
Police were investigating if alcohol was a factor.
