Avondale PD: Officer injured when carjacking suspect rams patrol car

Avondale police say an officer was injured when a carjacking suspect rammed his patrol car Sunday afternoon.

Around 1:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a large fight near 109th Avenue and Buckeye Road.

An officer struggled with a male suspect, but the suspect broke free and allegedly committed a carjacking.

Police said the suspect fled eastbound on Buckeye Road and intentionally drove into a patrol car driven by another officer who was responding to the call. According to police, the collision trapped the officer inside his patrol car.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene of the crash with a baseball bat and approached officers.

Police said when the suspect turned and broke out a window of a patrol vehicle, officers were able to deploy a Taser and take the suspect into custody.

The officer in the crash was taken to West Valley Hospital with minor injuries.

Another officer was taken to a hospital with a cut on his hand.
