Police ID victim allegedly killed by man who stabbed officer

PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal stabbing they believe was committed by the same suspect who also stabbed a woman and a Phoenix police officer.

Police said Saturday that 29-year-old Gabriel Stevens was killed at an apartment earlier this week and the suspect remains hospitalized.

Police say the officer shot the 33-year-old suspect in the chest Wednesday after the suspect punched him and held a kitchen knife to a woman.

They say both the woman and the officer were stabbed in the chest. The woman is expected to survive and the officer was treated and released.

Sgt. Jonathan Howard says the suspect's name will not be released until he is booked on charges.

Police investigating the shooting recovered another knife that they believe was used in Stevens' killing.
