GLENDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - Police have arrested an El Mirage man believed to be the "Cashbox Bandit," who is suspected in dozens of burglaries across the Valley.

Detectives from the Glendale Police Departments Property Crimes Unit apprehended David Kirby Womack, 52, on Tuesday following an undercover surveillance operation.

Officer Tracey Breeden said detectives observed Womack burglarize a local bakery and cafe in Surprise, using his 11-year-old stepson as a lookout. Detectives followed the suspect in his vehicle back to his residence.

Breeden said Womack began driving at a high rate of speed and ditched his vehicle and his stepson near his mobile home park. Detectives were able to take both of them safely into custody without incident.

Detectives believe Womack is connected to more than 60 burglaries to medical offices and other businesses in Glendale, Surprise, Peoria, Phoenix, Chandler, Tempe and Scottsdale since early this year.

Breeden said Womack was identified in surveillance video throughout the Valley.

Womack was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail. He faces two counts of felony burglary and one count of child abuse for intentionally placing the health of his stepson in jeopardy by involving him in the commission of felony crimes, according to Breeden. More charges could be coming in the future.

Breeden said the total property value is unknown at this time but could reach into the thousands of dollars.
