PHOENIX -- A man has died after being shot at his Phoenix apartment Sunday morning.

Police said it appears that 42-year-old James Michael Barrett was shot during some type of altercation at his apartment near 23rd Avenue and Indian School Road.

He was able to get to a neighbor's residence to ask for help before collapsing. Police were called around 10:30 a.m.

Barratt was transported to a hospital with a gunshot injury to his upper body and later pronounced dead.

Alice Pace said she believes money was the motive for her husband's killing.

"His life had been threatened because he got his disability check," she said. "Threats were going around that 'as soon as he gets paid, we're gonna hit him.' "

Police said they have very little to go on and are asking anyone with information to call the Phoenix Police Department Violent Crimes Bureau at 602-262-6141. To remain anonymous, call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
