Medical waste spill causes road closure in Eloy

ELOY, Ariz. -- A section of 11 Mile Corner Road in Eloy is closed after a medical waste spill Tuesday morning left syringes, sharps containers and scalpels in a ditch alongside the roadway.

The Eloy Police Department received a report that needles and sharps containers were strewn along the side of the roadway near 11 Mile Corner and Shedd roads shortly after 7:30 a.m.

Police said it appears that part of a medical waste load spilled from a trailer that was traveling through Eloy.

There is no public risk or any risk of exposure, according to police.

11 Mile Corner Road is closed in both directions between Shedd and Hanna roads. The intersection of 11 Mile Corner Road and Arica Road also is closed.

The closures will be in place until a company from Phoenix arrives to clean up the area.

Drivers are asked to use state Route 87 to Battaglia Drive, Casa Grande-Picacho Highway or Interstate 10 as alternate routes.
