PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) -- Maricopa County authorities say two Glendale men were ejected and killed Sunday when their all-terrain vehicles collided in the Hassayampa River bottom near Tonopah.

The Sheriff's Office identified the victims as 23-year-old Jesus Chavez and 47-year-old Dana Coerver.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred Sunday east of 399th Avenue and north of Indian School Road in an area commonly used for off-road vehicle drag racing.

Witnesses told Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detectives that Chavez was headed north on the river bottom when he and Coerver, who was heading east, collided.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff's Office says witnesses reported seeing unidentified people load Chavez's ATV into a truck and depart after the collision.

Chavez’s relatives say they do not know who might have taken the ATV. The case is still under investigation.
