PHOENIX (AP) -- An off-duty Phoenix firefighter was killed after the car he was driving crashed on a freeway in Chandler.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says 43-year-old Matt Hiatt was traveling eastbound on the Loop 202 San Tan Freeway near Dobson Road around 9:30 a.m. Friday when his vehicle crashed.

He was the sole occupant.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Phoenix Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner informed firefighters Saturday of Hiatt's death.

Hiatt, who lived in Gilbert, is the son of a retired Phoenix fire engineer.

Kalkbrenner says funeral arrangements are pending.
