PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona's top health official says he's stepping down next month.

Department of Health Services Director Will Humble announced Friday that he will leave office March 3 and that he's notified Gov. Doug Ducey of his plan.

Humble has been with the agency since 1992 and has been director for the past six years.

His departure is somewhat of a surprise because Ducey announced Jan. 9 that he was retaining Humble in Ducey's new administration.

Humble did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but he said in a statement it's time to move on to something else.

Humble says he doesn't have any exact plans yet and plans to catch his breath for a while. But he said he likely will be involved in public health again.
