Motorcycle operator killed in West Phoenix crash

PHOENIX -- A motorcycle driver was killed after he was struck by a car early Thursday afternoon, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was rushed from the scene at 79th Avenue and Buckeye Road to a nearby trauma center in extremely critical condition. MCSO confirmed he died a short time later. His name was not released.

Photos from the Phoenix Fire Department show the car was heavily damaged and the motorcycle was in pieces.

Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Benjamin Santillan said the motorcycle operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The collision remains under investigation.
