PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has ordered flags lowered to half-staff statewide through Friday in honor of a Prescott woman who died while being held captive by the Islamic State.

Ducey's Tuesday order came after confirmation that 26-year-old Kayla Jean Mueller was indeed dead. The Pentagon says Mueller died at the hands of Islamic State and not in an airstrike as the militant group says.

Ducey says he talked with Mueller's father and expressed his condolences and prayers and the prayers of all Arizonans.

At a news conference, Ducey called Mueller a "beautiful and compassionate person who was a humanitarian and an example for all of us."

Ducey says Mueller did more in her short life than many do with a much longer one.

Mueller had been held captive since 2013.
