MESA, Ariz. -- A special trial service began on Tuesday at the Walmart near Arizona Avenue and Loop 202 San Tan, but that store isn't the only one offering this new program.

Two other Walmarts in Mesa are also offering online grocery buying. The items cost the same as the in-store items, but there is a $30 minimum-purchase requirement.

Walmart is doing this as a convenient option for parents, shoppers with mobility challenges and those who want to shop on their own schedule.

“Probably something I'd have to try. Minimum 30 bucks. I normally pay that,” said Walmart customer Danny Serrano.

You start out by visiting their website and entering your zip code. After that there are step-by-step instructions that take you through the whole process.

Customers will receive a phone call to let them know when their order is ready and which pilot store to pick it up at.

In time, Walmart officials said they'd like all the stores to be involved.

Once customers arrive, they call a designated phone number to alert an associate in the store, who will load the groceries into the car.

“Why not take it a step further, and have it delivered to your home,” said Serrano.

That might be in the works, but right now, it's just to your car. But it sounds good to busy folks like Richard Draper. "Probably something I would consider. I'm a pretty busy person.”

Other grocers offer their own versions of online ordering.

Safeway is one that offers delivery service for online orders with a $49 minimum purchase.
