FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- State Route 89A between Flagstaff and Sedona was fully reopened late Tuesday afternoon.

A three-mile stretch of the scenic northern Arizona highway had been closed due to a sinkhole in the roadway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation closed State Route 89A in both directions at the Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks about 15 miles south of Flagstaff after the sinkhole was observed Saturday.

Crews on Monday used heavy equipment to remove loose material beneath the pavement. They then filled the void with a liquid concrete-cement mix. Workers then had to wait for the mixture to dry before repaving the roadway.

ADOT reopened the southbound lane Tuesday morning.
