MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. -- A 26-year-old man is facing a variety of drug charges after deputies found 14 pounds of heroin in his car.

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies arrested Carlos Omar Verdugo-Pacheco on Friday.

According to MCSO, a K-9 alerted on his vehicle. Deputies searched the 2008 GMC Acadia and found a hidden compartment. The heroin, worth nearly $500,000, was stashed inside.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the arrest was part of his organization's crackdown on both major drug traffickers and street-level dealers, as well as users.

"Large seizures of heroin once again reflect on the serious heroin problem in the Valley which also involves young users," Arpaio said in a news release.

MCSO did not release any other details, saying that the investigation is ongoing.

Verdugo-Pacheco is being held without bond at the Fourth Avenue Jail. MCSO said he also has an immigration hold.
