MESA, Ariz. -- Recently 3 On Your Side's Gary Harper went to a business called Discount Engine after management there failed to respond to our numerous inquiries. However, the response given was dismissive, telling 3 On Your Side to come back another day.

Gary Harper told an employee who identified himself as a manager, "It's despicable It's despicable, that you guys do this to your customers!"

That manager who said his name was Will responded by saying, "I don't know anything about it man."

Not knowing anything seems to be a common theme for Discount Engine located at 1507 S. Country Club Dr. in Mesa, said Carrie Thomas. She took her daughter's car to Discount Engine more than a year ago to have a new motor installed.

But Thomas said that motor was never put in her car.

"There was just some time that went by and I felt like they just kept giving me the runaround," said Thomas.

Thomas said when she initially dropped her car off at Discount Engine back in 2013, the business asked for and received $1,000 up front from Thomas.

However, after more than a month of looking at her car simply sit at Discount Engine with no engine work performed, Thomas lost her patience and asked if she could tow her car somewhere else.

She said Discount Engine finally agreed, but the company refused to return the $1,000 that she gave them.

"I don't even believe he ordered the engine."

Down to only one family vehicle at the time, and wanting her money back, Thomas successfully sued Discount Engine and a judge issued an order demanding the business to pay Thomas around $560.

It was less than the $1,000 Thomas handed over because the business argued there was a restocking fee.

Regardless, Thomas said Discount Engine has never returned a dime and she said they continue to blow her off.

So, 3 On Your Side got involved and found Discount Engine has an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau with 27 consumer complaints.

After initial emails and phone calls to the business were not returned, 3 On Your Side's Gary Harper, went to the business.

Harper: "I never heard back from you, you said you'd look into it and we never heard back so now I'm here to find out what's going on.

Will (Discount Engine): "Ok I don't know, you're gonna have to come back next week."

There was a guy hiding behind the office cubicle saying his name was Will and claiming to be in charge of Discount Engine.

But, he said he wasn't interested in talking to 3OYS, the conversation then moved outside where he claimed he knew nothing about Thomas or the money the business owed her.

Harper: "That's very convenient!"
Will: "Go chase an ambulance."
Harper: "Do you guys do this to everybody? Is this a routine?"
Will: "I'd do it to you!"
Harper: "This is a routine!"

During the conversation, things took a turn.

Harper: "Why would anyone come to your place?"
Will: "I hate your channel by the way.
Gary: 'You hate my channel?"
Will: 'Yeah!"
Gary: "Why?"
Will: "It's just terrible!"

And Will's kind words didn't stop there.

Will:  "Your TV show sucks!"
Harper: (laughing)"I love when you say that."
Harper: "You're on the losing end, pal!"

But after that visit, Discount Engine mailed Thomas a check for $600. A little bit more than that judgment because of the interest that was owed.

It's money Thomas said she's been waiting more than a year to get and said she never would have received it if it wasn't for 3 On Your Side.

"3 On Your Side was just awesome!" said Thomas. "What they did to support me and go to bat for me I just couldn't thank them enough."

A good rule of thumb to follow before taking your car to any shop is to first check out the Better Business Bureau, ask for some referrals, and whenever possible, don't hand over any money up front.
