PHOENIX -- Three people were critically injured in a crash involving several vehicles near 20th Street and Bell Road in Phoenix Thursday morning.

According to Capt. Aaron Ernsberger with the Phoenix Fire Department, a car traveling westbound crossed over the median and collided with several eastbound vehicles.

"The impact was very significant and there was some major damage sustained to the vehicles and also, obviously, to the operators and passengers of those cars," Ernsberger said.

Two people had to be extricated from one of the vehicles.

Ernsberger said one woman and three men were transported to local hospitals. They are all in their mid-30s. Three of them were in critical condition and the other sustained minor injuries. One other person refused transport.

At this time, it is unclear what caused the car to cross into the oncoming lanes.

Bell Road is closed in both directions from 20th Street to 18th Street.
